HYDERABAD: Syeda Anita Shah Lakyari, a distinguished educator, columnist, and advocate for women’s rights, breathed her last at the age of 49 in Hyderabad. Her passing marks the end of a life dedicated to education, activism, and journalism.

Syeda Anita Shah Lakyari, who had been battling Alzheimer’s disease, was deeply affected by personal tragedies, including the loss of her brother in a tragic accident and subsequently her parents. Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast in her commitments.

Graduating with a Master of Business Administration and Master of Sociology from Sindh University in 1998 and 2002, respectively, Lakyari pursued further studies in the United States through a fellowship program at the University of Maryland in 2007.

Her impact on society was profound and multifaceted. Beginning her journey as a columnist in 1994 with the Sindhi daily Kawish, she focused on advocating for women’s rights, a cause close to her heart. Her words resonated widely, inspiring conversations and actions toward gender equality.

Syeda Anita Shah Lakyari’s reach extended beyond the written word; she ventured into broadcast journalism, hosting talk shows on a Sindhi news channel and contributing as a reporter and producer for Voice of America’s “Beyond Headlines” in 2007.

In addition to her media endeavors, she served in governmental roles, including as a Section Officer in the Sindh government and later as Deputy Secretary in the Sindh Culture Department in 2001. Her dedication to social causes was exemplified by the establishment of a non-governmental organization focused on rural upliftment in 2006.

Her passing leaves a void in the education, media, and advocacy sectors, where her contributions were invaluable. Her funeral prayers were offered in Qasimabad, and she was laid to rest in the Wanki Wassi area graveyard in Hatri, Hyderabad, where she will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to social progress and justice.
