The Legend of Noori Jam Tamachi – A Tale of Love & Devotion
Noori Jam Tamachi story is one of Sindh’s most famous folktales, immortalized in Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s Shah Jo Risalo. It is a tale of love, humility, and devotion, set against the backdrop of Keenjhar Lake, where Noori Jam Tamachi Mazar still stands today as a popular tourist attraction.
Jam Tamachi – The Noble King
During the 14th century, Sindh was ruled by the Samma dynasty, and one of its most just and beloved kings was Jam Tamachi. Unlike many rulers, he frequently traveled across his kingdom to connect with his people.
One day, while boating on Keenjhar Lake, he came across a simple yet graceful fisherwoman named Noori, whose humility and kindness captivated him.
Noori – The Humble Fisherwoman
Noori belonged to the Makrani fisherfolk community, living near the lake. Though she came from a modest background, she had a pure heart, untainted by greed or arrogance.
Jam Tamachi, enchanted by her sincerity, chose to marry her, defying social norms. This decision shocked the royal court, as no king had ever married a commoner before.
Jealousy in the Royal Court
In the palace, Noori’s presence led to jealousy among the other queens, who were of noble birth. They tried to defame her, even falsely accusing her of stealing royal jewels.
However, Jam Tamachi saw through their deception. He declared:
“Noori’s heart is purer than all the riches of my kingdom.”
From that day, Noori became his most cherished queen, proving that love and humility surpass wealth and status.
Noori’s Final Wish & Noori Jam Tamachi grave
Despite being a queen, Noori never forgot her roots and longed for the tranquil waters of Keenjhar Lake. Before passing away, she made a final request—to be buried in the lake she loved the most. Noori Jam Tamachi Tomb was built in Keenjhar Lake as per her wish. whereas Jam Tamachi’s grave is located in Makli the largest graveyard , Thatta, honoring their legacy. This historic site symbolizes eternal love and attracts tourists to explore Sindh’s rich heritage and scenic beauty.
Honoring her wish, Jam Tamachi had her tomb built on a small island in Keenjhar Lake, where she rests eternally.
Saving Keenjhar Lake – A Treasure for Sindh & Karachi
Today, Keenjhar Lake is not just a historical and cultural landmark but also a vital water source for Karachi, supplying drinking water to nearly 20 million people. However, the lake is under severe threat from pollution, industrial waste, and environmental neglect.
